Madrid Art & History walking tour

The Prado Museum
Paintings by Bosch displayed inside the Prado Museum

Inside the Prado

The Prado invites you to slow down and look closely. A glance exchanged across a royal room, a face caught in shadow, or a tiny figure hidden in an imagined landscape can change the way you understand a painting. With an art historian alongside you, those details offer a way into the people, beliefs and ambitions behind the art.

A collection shaped by Spain’s royal past

The museum opened in 1819 with paintings from the royal collections. Today, Spanish masters such as Velázquez and Goya sit alongside Italian and Flemish artists, including Titian, Rubens and Bosch. Moving between them gives a sense of the tastes and connections that shaped the collection, as well as the very different ways artists saw the world.

Two paintings that reward a second look

In Las Meninas, Velázquez places himself at work beside the young Infanta Margarita and her attendants. A mirror at the back reflects the king and queen. Follow the figures’ gazes and the room begins to feel like a puzzle about who is watching whom, and where you, the viewer, belong.

Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights offers a very different kind of looking. Across three connected panels, tiny figures, strange creatures and imagined landscapes form a densely detailed world. It is a painting that rewards moving between the whole scene and the smallest discoveries.

Your Madrid art and history tour

The Prado visit is part of your 10:00 AM–2:00 PM tour, which also explores Madrid’s Old Quarter. Your art historian connects the city’s history with its art, giving the museum visit a place within the broader story of Madrid. The supplier includes your local art expert, entrance fees to the sites, and local taxi transportation if necessary.

Visit the Prado Museum and the Old Quarter of Madrid

10 AM

Meet your art historian at hotel lobby and start to discover Madrid under its different historical periods.

Walk through the Madrid of the Habsburgs (Madrid de los Austrias). The reign of the Spanish Austrian-Habsburg dynasty, which ruled from 1516 up to 1700, signified the beginning of a peak artistic period that fashioned a beautiful and popular area of the city. The Austrian-Habsburg dynasty transformed Madrid into what is known today as the city’s historical center, where edifices evoking memories of an imperial Spain, representative of the largest empire known on Earth (stretching from the Americas far beyond the Netherlands), are found. In their honor, this “old” area of the Spanish capital is known as “Madrid de los Austrias”.

Visit the Prado Museum. This gallery in Madrid has the most complete collection of Spanish paintings from 11th-18th centuries, and numerous masterpieces by great universal artists such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Bosch, Titian, Van Dyck and Rembrandt. The quality and variety of its collection makes the Prado one of the world's best-endowed museums. It combines a first-class collection of Spanish paintings, the most important works of the Flemish and Italian schools, and various fine examples of the German, French and English schools. It is home to numerous masterpieces of universal art such as Las Meninas by Velázquez, the two Majas by Goya, Nobleman with his hand on his chest by El Greco, the Garden of Delights by Bosch, and The Three Graces by Rubens, among other priceless pieces.

Although the museum was created to house primarily works of paintings and sculptures, it also contains major collections of drawings, engravings, coins and medals, as well as items of clothing and decorative art.

Flamenco performance at Corral de la Morería

Corral de la Morería
A dancer in a patterned dress performing with singers and guitarists at Corral de la Morería

Flamenco, up close

An evening here brings you close to the conversation between dancer, singer and guitar. Listen for the rhythm in the footwork and handclaps, watch the smallest gestures, and notice how the performers respond to one another. In an intimate room, those details become part of the experience.

A small stage with a remarkable history

Corral de la Morería opened in 1956 in Madrid’s La Latina neighbourhood. Its stage has welcomed generations of flamenco artists, including Antonio Gades, Pastora Imperio and Blanca del Rey. Paco de Lucía presented “Entre dos aguas” here, and Blanca del Rey created her celebrated shawl soleá, a dance that became closely associated with the venue.

The energy of a live performance

The artistic programme changes each week, bringing established dancers and company leaders into this close setting, accompanied by singers and guitarists. That is part of its appeal: artists who perform in major theatres can be experienced here at a much more intimate scale.

For a first encounter with flamenco, follow the exchange between the performers. The dancing is only one part of it. The voice, guitar and rhythm carry the evening together, shifting your attention from one artist to another.

Your evening

Your proposal includes the 8:00–9:10 PM performance and one drink. The 7:30 PM taxi journey and return after the show are on your own, as described in the itinerary.

Half Day Excursion to Toledo / WEEKDAYS & SATURDAYS

Toledo
Toledo Cathedral rising above the dense rooftops of the old city

Through Toledo’s old streets

Toledo is a city to discover on foot, moving from narrow streets into open squares and from weathered stone into richly decorated interiors. Its cathedral rises above a dense pattern of rooftops, while the old Jewish quarter reveals a different scale: quieter lanes, doorways and the remarkable spaces preserved within its former synagogues.

Jewish heritage in Santa María la Blanca

Inside Santa María la Blanca, rows of pale pillars support horseshoe arches, with carved details drawing your eye upward. The repeated arches give the interior a striking sense of rhythm and depth. This former synagogue, later converted into a church, is an important part of Toledo’s Jewish heritage and an example of Mudéjar architecture.

The visit offers a way to explore the city’s layered Jewish, Christian and Muslim histories through the buildings that remain. Your local guide adds the stories and context behind the monuments as you walk through the Jewish quarter.

Grand architecture and an intimate encounter with art

The cathedral brings a change of scale, with soaring Gothic architecture, stained glass and richly worked decoration. At nearby Santo Tomé, attention turns to a single celebrated painting: El Greco’s The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. Seeing it in the church gives the work a connection to Toledo that a reproduction cannot convey.

These contrasts are part of the pleasure of the morning: the city seen as a whole, the details of an arch or a carved capital, and the chance to pause with a work of art in the place where it belongs.

Your private excursion

Your driver takes you from Madrid at 9:00 AM to meet your local guide at Puerta de Bisagra at 10:00 AM. The proposed route includes the cathedral, Jewish quarter, Santa María la Blanca and Santo Tomé. Your guided visit ends at 1:30 PM, followed by the return drive to Madrid, arriving at 2:30 PM. A local expert guide, entrance fees to the sites, and a private car and driver are included.

Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments. Known as the “city of the three cultures”, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together there for centuries, behind its walls Toledo preserves an artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. This great diversity of artistic styles makes the old quarter of the capital of Castile La Mancha a real open-air museum, which has led to it being declared a World Heritage Site.

Evening Wine and Tapas Tour

Wine and Tapas in Madrid
A selection of colourful tapas being shared at a table

An evening around the table in Madrid

This evening is a chance to discover Madrid through its food and the people who serve it. With your private host leading the way, you move between four tapas stops in Malasaña, tasting, talking and getting to know the neighbourhood as you go. The pleasure is in the whole evening: a new flavour, a glass of wine, a story from a bar owner, and the walk to the next place together.

The neighbourhood between the stops

Malasaña brings old Madrid and a more contemporary city into the same streets. Traditional taverns sit alongside newer cafés, small shops and lively terraces. Around Plaza del Dos de Mayo, narrow streets open onto a square where people meet and linger. It is a neighbourhood with its own character, giving the evening as much a sense of place as a taste of the city.

Your host connects the food with the surroundings, sharing the neighbourhood’s legends and stories from Madrid’s modern history. The walks between stops become part of the experience, with time to notice the streets and talk about what you have just tasted.

Food, wine and the stories behind them

Going out for tapas gives dinner a different rhythm. Instead of settling in for one meal at one restaurant, the evening unfolds across several places, each bringing another taste and a different atmosphere. Your guide helps you explore the tapas Madrid is known for and the stories behind each dish.

The wine tasting adds another way to get to know Spain. With a tapas, wine and culture expert beside you, you can ask questions, compare what you enjoy and build a little confidence for ordering during the rest of your stay. Meeting the bar owners brings a personal connection to the evening, beyond what you could learn from a menu.

Your private evening

Your host meets you in the hotel lobby, with pickup by car to begin exploring Malasaña. The proposal includes a private expert guide, four tapas stops, and a hearty dinner with five drinks.
